Primary School Book Tasting

Earlier this week, 2nd grade teachers, Mellie Davis and Mekdie Solomon, transformed their classroom into a restaurant and served their students a variety of books to "taste." As each student checked in, they were seated at a table with a centerpiece of books. The students had two timed tasting sessions where they had to pick a book and read it for five minutes. After their time was up, they filled out a menu card with the book's title, author, and what they liked or disliked about the book. "It's OK to not like a book," Mekdie says, “[and] I'd like to know why." Having the students fill out the menu card develops their critical thinking skills and hones their ability to evaluate books based on a variety of different criteria.

The restaurant setting also encourages the social aspect of reading. Students conversed and shared books they were excited to read. During the tasting, Mellie and Mekdie saw students select books they may not have otherwise chosen. By the end of the tasting students had at least one book on their book list to read and spent more time reading during independent reading time.
