Lunar New Year Celebrations

Gung Hay Fat Choy! Pre-Primary students celebrated Lunar New Year last week. Children learned about the celebration by reading books, exploring artifacts, creating arts and crafts, and tasting traditional foods from Asian regions. Teachers introduced Chinese characters to children and discussed different characteristics of the language. Students learned family customs during this time such as gathering together to eat traditional foods, wearing new clothes, and using a broom to sweep out the old and welcome in the new year and new opportunities.

Pre-Primary children’s studies culminated on Friday, as the art studio transformed into an Asian-themed restaurant decorated with paper lanterns and other Asian artifacts the children made. They dined on white rice, oranges, seaweed, and tea and fortune cookies while listening to traditional Chinese music. In Dance, Elly directed students in celebratory ribbon dancing, careful acrobatics holding an umbrella, and in turning and twisting Chinese rattle drums to ward off negative energy. Best of all, children were able to march around in Ellie’s special dragon costume, each taking a turn at the head of the dragon gliding along the dance floor.
