MS Girls Basketball Victorious Again at Burke Tournament

The Leopards showed confidence after their first game of the tournament against the host, Burke, securing a 28-18 victory to advance to the finals. After seeing Sheridan, their next challenger, shut out Green Acres 30-0, younger players showed concern. Coach Mallory reassured the team and explained their strategy to win: block Sheridan’s #11, box out, and sink the lay ups.

The Leopards stayed strong, even as Sheridan found a way to break the press by the second quarter, earning mid-range jump shots to take the lead at half-time 12-9. Sheridan made strong efforts to block Zuri who converted every loose ball into a lay-up scoring six in a row to give the Leopards the lead into the fourth quarter.

The teams fought for the lead at a furious pace. Timeouts were called to preserve possession—as were fouls—and players fought for each rebound. Closing out the game, Kayla seized an opportunity as the ball shot out from a loose-ball scrum. Kayla drove the ball down the court, took a shot and scored. With 1:40 left, Lowell showed determination. Protecting the team’s one-point lead, Isabella denied Sheridan’s last attempt at a shot knocking the ball away and flying down the court with state champion speed.

Congratulations to the Leopards—Champions of the Burke Tournament—winning over Sheridan 21-20!
