2018 Spring Athletics Wrap-Up

Spring Athletics Summary, 2018
Dave Levy, Athletic Director

Over 150 athletes participated in Lowell Athletics this season, contributing to an incredibly successful year in sports. Lowell had an exciting season across the board—highlights included Lowell’s inaugural Middle School Baseball team and Senior Track and Field, which had our first ever Middle School DC Champion!

Senior Track and Field
Senior Track and Field competed with the best the DC area had to offer and experienced great success. The Leopards dominated the German School Invitational by 58 points, won two gold medals at Saint Albans, and established seven new school records. At the Sidwell Invitational, the girls won the 4x400 by over 30 seconds!

An exceptional athlete, 6th grader Isabella led by example. She placed in the top three in the long jump at each meet, before earning a Lowell, DC, and personal record of 14’10.5” at Saint Albans. With that jump, Isabella was the 2018 D.C. Middle School Long Jump Champion. Additionally, Isabella medaled in every meet in the 100, 200, and 400, establishing new school records of 13.94 in the 100 (previously held by Isabel ’14), and 1:10.54 in the 400 meters. She was the anchor of Lowell’s all-time best 4x400 (5:11.55) also featuring Liliana, Frankie, and Juliana.

Berke led the boys team with school records in the high jump (4’2”) and the 400 (1:06.92), in addition to anchoring both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays throughout the season.

The Leopards graduate nine 8th graders, but the team is loaded with talented Primary School athletes and of course, a DC champion, as they prepare for 2019!

Middle School Baseball
The Middle School Baseball team brought great energy and drew large crowds for their first three games in Lowell history. The fans sported the trendy new baseball caps! After a tough opening game against Norwood, the Leopards got progressively stronger as the season went on. In a close game against Woods Academy, Lowell rallied from a large deficit to hit back-to-back home runs! Tristan struck first, and Dylan followed with immense power to the outfield. Under the tutelage of Lucas and Vaughn, the Leopards practiced over at Meadowbrook Park and enjoyed great success—with Tristan, Flynn, and Oakley firing the ball in from the mound!

Lowell is very excited to have our first season under our belt, and the Leopards return 12 players from the inaugural squad as we look to build on this historic season!

Girls Lacrosse
With a 4th grade goalie and a new coach, the Leopards took on some tough opponents from all over the DC area. Clara was a rock in goal, knocking away shots from all directions. Her best game came on the road against Norwood where she saved over 20 shots. Kate, an 8th grade striker with a fierce shot who scored in nearly every game this season, was the unofficial captain of the team. Her classmate Gabby was in charge of the defense, and they worked together to make it tough on their opponents.

The team returns 13 of their 19 players, is poised to continue to develop a deep skill set, and will continue to improve!

Ultimate Frisbee
Lowell Ultimate Frisbee enjoyed great success this season. The Leopards took on two new opponents this season—hosting Edlin School and traveling to Alexandria Country Day School. In both cases, the Leopards improved as the games went on outhustling their opponents, particularly in the second half. The Leopards played formidable defense and showed off their ability to throw from a variety of angles. The games also featured a variety of highlight-reel catches, including Cyrus’s dive in the end zone for a score and Elise’s relentless defense!

The team had no 8th graders and was led by a deep group of 7th graders, including Elise, Ryan, Baran, Phillip, Frederick, Jake, Benu, and Nicholas. With this group in the ranks for their 8th Grade season, the Leopards will be a force to be reckoned with in 2019.

Junior Track and Field
The Junior Track and Field team continued to bring great energy with a ton of participants. The team played a number of running games and hosted a very exciting end-of-season meet with their parents on the front field—focusing on speed, flexibility, endurance, and core strength. They learned about a variety of events, including sprints, relays, hurdles, jumps, and throws and had lots of fun!
