Fourth graders formed book groups this month to examine different perspectives in first-person narratives. Characters in each book are on journeys of self-discovery and face unique challenges. Stories focus on different aspects of characters’ identities—physical appearance, abilities, and gender—and tackle questions of ethics during pivotal moments in characters’ lives. Teachers guide students in dissecting story arcs into the exposition, rising action, conflict, falling action, and resolution. Students discuss the choices that characters make throughout the stories, make predictions, and share their surprise at how the stories unfold. Along the way they build a framework for understanding other points of view and develop the courage to face their own challenges, even the ones still unknown.
