Champions for the 5th Straight Year

Lowell’s cross country team arrived at the Small School Championships (formerly known as the ISSAC Championships) on Tuesday determined to defend their title. They knew the competition, Lab School, Barrie, Congressional School, Capital City Public Charter School, Barnesville, and Sienna, and for four years in a row, they've brought home the title. They were looking to add a fifth.

The boys were first up to the starting line. Dylan and Frederick, two key runners on the team, were out due to injury and illness leaving a leadership gap for others to fill. As the race got underway, Mac worked his way to the front and held a 200-meter lead against his closest competition from Lab School. Lab's runners gained some ground on Mac but couldn't catch up. "He really took on the challenge," says Coach Dave Levy who saw a shift in Mac that day. Not only did Mac finish first with a time of 12:53, but he shaved five minutes off of his time last year—"a remarkable improvement," Dave says. The next leader to emerge was Joshua, who lead a pack of four runners to the finish line grabbing 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th places.

In the girls' race, Zoe battled her way to the front and hit the sweet spot racing down the hill, passing several runners to secure second with a time of 14:04. Just a minute later, Natalie crossed the line at 15:06, running 32 seconds faster than her 2017 time. Lilliana followed close behind setting a new personal record of 15:30. Lily and Emma perfectly paced each other the entire course resulting in personal records for both, a prime example of the benefits of working together on the course.

In cross country, points are bad. Adding together the places of Lowell's top five runners in the boys race,* 1st, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th, Lowell pulled together for a fifth straight win earning 27 points in the championship, Lab came in close with 35. "New runners stepped up as heroes—giving Lowell an incredible victory," Dave says, "we will raise a banner to celebrate the success!"

*Awaiting girls results.
