Middle School Music Teacher

Lowell School, a progressive school of approximately 330 students in NW Washington, DC, seeks a Middle School Music (Band and Choral) Teacher beginning at the start of the 2024–2025 academic year. The Middle School Music Teacher reports to the Middle School Director and is a member of the Middle School Division. This position requires a varied schedule–including some evenings—and leading designated special events and performances on weekends and outside of regular school hours. 

Education and Experience:   
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in music education or a related field, master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 1 to 3 years of teaching experience.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • The ability to select skill-appropriate repertoire, lead an ensemble, and execute performances for band ensembles, with the possibility of adding choral ensembles.
  • The ability to teach and manage both small and large groups, as well as groups with varied skill levels
  • The ability to arrange ensemble music.
  • Innovate and review the current music curriculum and propose new music curriculum, courses, and/or electives.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster a safe learning environment that promotes respect, equity, and cultural competency.

Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Possess a contagious enthusiasm for their craft with a specialty in music.
  • Create an engaging environment for teaching and learning.
  • Create cross-disciplinary/integration opportunities.
  • Be flexible with the space and scheduling of performances and class periods.
  • Identify resources, ideas, and strategies to ensure student achievement.
  • Build relationships with arts and other organizations in the region; utilize the abundance of resources in the area.
  • Regularly assess student achievement and skill mastery.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Manage classroom administration and record keeping, including grades, attendance records, and student progress.
  • Regularly communicate with students and families to share progress and opportunities.
  • Serve as a student advisor.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to traverse school facilities and lead students to safety in the event of an emergency.
  • Long periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
