Becoming an Ally in Middle School

How can you spot an inclusive community? Director of Diversity Michelle Belton will answer this question next week as Middle School students prepare to participate in Ally Week, which is sponsored by GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network).

Ally Week—Monday, September 26 through Friday, September 30—challenges anyone who participates to work towards being a better ally for LGBTQ youth. Schools around the country register and pledge to make a safe and inclusive space for these students. During this time, students reflect on what it means to be an ally, who their allies are, and how they can be allies for others.

Growing student interest in LGBTQ issues and providing a safe, inclusive community for all helped inspire the Middle School’s decision to join Ally Week this year. “[Lowell] is a safe place where you can be yourself, safe from any harassment,” says Michelle, and it’s important that people know that this is a supportive community. Participating in Ally Week is one way to underscore and build on the community’s commitment.

Next week during Middle School Gathering, students will be guided through a series of activities to spark dialogue and brainstorm ways to ensure this safe space is known and visible by all. Want to know how YOU can be a part of Ally Week? Here are some suggestions from GLSEN. Genderspectrum.org and welcomingschools.org are two great additional resources to learn more about this topic.
