2017 Fall Athletics Wrap Up

By Dave Levy, Athletic Director

With a record number of 91 athletes participating in fall athletics, Lowell School enjoyed incredible success. The Middle School Girls Soccer team finished the season with a 4-2 record, their first winning season ever! Cross Country earned its fourth consecutive ISSAC Championship. The team will raise yet another banner in the gym to commemorate their success. The 4/5 Boys Soccer team strung together two consecutive victories, winning at home against the British School of Washington and then again on the road at Grace Episcopal. The Middle School Boys Soccer team had its largest roster ever, including six 8th graders. For all the athletes, coaches, and families involved, the 2017 fall season showed incredible success, sportsmanship, and growth for the Lowell Athletics Program.

Cross Country
The Cross Country team competed with and beat the best runners in the Washington area. The team ran at the Landon Invitational, which featured over a dozen strong opponents. Natalie won her first ever race that day, while Kyriakos and Dylan both placed in the top ten. Lowell finished third overall, beating both Sidwell and Flint Hill.

For the fourth season in a row, the Lowell Cross Country team won the ISSAC Championships at Barrie. This season the meet was super close, with Lowell edging out the nearest opponent 43-45. The team had four runners in the top 10 and five in the top 15. Kyriakos lead the team in 2nd place with 12:49; Frederick (13:25), Sam (13:36) Dylan (13:44 ) and Ollie (14:16) rounded out the victorious top 5. On the girl's side, Isabella won overall with 14:17.

For the third year in a row, the team was invited to participate in the MD/DC Private School Championships at Belvior Scotts, where they competed on an incredibly challenging course against nearly 500 runners. Kyriakos placed 22nd to lead the boy's team, which finished 8th out of 20 teams, defeating Saint Andrew’s, Saint Patrick’s, and Forcey Christian, among others. The girls finished in 7th place, defeating Sidwell Friends, Roland Park Country, and St. Mary Catholic School. Natalie was Lowell’s top female finisher, coming in 33rd.

The Leopards had nearly 40 runners, each improving throughout the season and earning personal records as they trained hard in Rock Creek Park logging tons of miles and battling through challenging interval workouts. The Leopards are remarkably young, with only five 8th graders, and are poised to go after a 5th consecutive championship title next season.

Soccer
Each of the Lowell Soccer teams enjoyed great success. Finishing with a record of 4-2, the Girls Soccer team earned their first winning record in Lowell history. In the season opener, the Leopards trailed 2-0 at the half and rallied to win 3-2, what an exciting victory! With a group of athletes that included 4th-8th graders, the Leopards worked beautifully together and had contributions from many different players. Our only 8th grader led by example: Gabby played tough middle defense throughout the season. Kayla set up all of her teammates to be in a position to score, finishing the season with six assists. Isabella was always the fastest player on the field while Brielle and Maddie attacked the goal. Arielle played another fabulous season as the goaltender, limiting opponents to less than two goals in every game, including a 3-0 shutout against Milton. The team enjoyed their first wins ever against Norwood (5-1), Woods Academy (3-2), and NPS (8-1). The Leopards are loaded with young talent, and there is nowhere to go but up for this historic team!

Led by a chorus of 8th graders, the MS Boys Leopards took on a range of opponents. Nick, Tristan, Ethan, Flynn, Andrew, and Jay each provided critical leadership and helped the Leopards to three wins this season. Nick is a strong midfielder, always in the right position. As strikers, Tristan (one of our all-time leading scorers) and Jay worked together to create scoring chances. Ethan, Flynn, and Andrew are all members of a very talented back line! The team defeated the German School (12-0), Barrie (6-3), and Barnesville (7-5)—all on the road—and enjoyed high scoring totals along the way. Additionally, the Leopards got great defense from some of their younger players; 6th graders Jacob and Grant helped to anchor the middle of the defense while Eli was a star as the goaltender. The team had an incredible amount of skill and was able to outmaneuver bigger opponents. While we will miss our 8th grade stars, the team returns 13 players from a talented roster for the 2018 season.

For the 4/5 Boys Soccer team, every game was close and exciting! Whether it was a scrimmage in practice or a tough match against another team, the lead was always changing, and the Leopards played their hearts out. The team had a strong season, worked well together with great enthusiasm, and constantly improved. After a few close, tough losses early in the season, the team earned back-to-back wins over the British School at Lowell, 6-5, and on the road at Grace Episcopal, 8-1. In both cases, the Leopards displayed great sportsmanship to go with their soccer success. The Leopards finished the season with an exciting 2-2 tie against Milton. The team was led by a duo of strong strikers in Julian and Cyrus, a trio of goaltenders in Diego, Elias and Nathaniel, and talented defenders in Max and Winston. One of our largest rosters ever, the Leopards rotated so that each player got the opportunity to play many minutes this season!
