June Durkee '13

June Durkee ‘13 graduated Magna Cum Laude from Mercyhurst University in May with a BA in hospitality management with a concentration in events. She was inducted into the Mercyhurst University Service Honor Society. Inductees are nominated based on their “Service to Others” on campus or in the community, as well as their exemplary academic performance and character. June served as a Student Ambassador at Mercyhurst for three years, where she helped in the admissions office with tours, freshman orientation, and alumni-related events.

June found extracurricular activities and internships that fostered her love of sports, building on her middle school career as a competitive gymnast in trampoline and tumbling, and her high school participation in volleyball, basketball, and tennis. This past spring, she completed an on-campus internship with the Mercyhurst Athletics Department, where she got more experience on how to operate the scoreboard, clock, and keeping track of stats across multiple sports. One highlight from her internship was keeping stats while working the NCAA women’s frozen four hockey tournament that was held in Erie, PA. This summer she is looking forward to her online internship with the Sports & Fitness Industry Association (SFIA) as a Thought Leadership Intern, where she will explore how her degree in events management can intertwine with the sports world.

She looks forward to learning while doing, which stems from her time at Lowell School from Pre-Primary to the 2nd grade. She fondly remembers the hands-on projects and field trips, as well as time in Loriann Signori’s Kindergarten class. June recognizes that as an autistic person, she learns best through hands-on experiences. Experiential learning at Lowell and the Lab School propelled June towards great accomplishments at Mercyhurst and aspirational goals for the future, based on service towards others.
