Weekend of Service
From the LPSC…
As the LPSC, the piece that we are missing so much this year is the opportunity to be together. We are so sad that we won't be able to gather with our children and work together in service to our community. But as that service component is so important to so many of us on this holiday, we have gathered these ideas of ways that you and your families can spend the upcoming weekend together. (Boring Disclaimer: These are simply suggestions and ideas, no agency is being promoted or endorsed by Lowell or LPSC)
- COVID-19: The reality of the pandemic is, many people in our community simply need money- for food, housing, and other essentials. Here is a list of citywide Mutual Aid Societies and other direct action organizations where you can donate. Here is also an article about Mutual Aid Societies. Perhaps share with your children, discuss mutual aid, charity, and volunteer services, and make a decision together about whether and how much to contribute.
- LDC LIFE: MuralsDC51 is a citywide mural art project to promote the District's decades-long quest for statehood. Take a virtual or in person tour of the murals and talk about how the lack of statehood has impacted on the lives of DC's majority Black population, and how that relates to past and future activism.
- FMAILIES IN NEED: Want to give physical items that your kids can directly relate to helping families in need? DC Diaper Bank Warehouse has various drop off locations throughout the area, accepting items like diapers, formula, and hygiene supplies.
- THIS SATURDAY: Want to set up to become a regular volunteer with an area organization in need? Food and Friends delivers healthy, nutritious meals and groceries to those battling serious illnesses. They are still in need of volunteers to drive for no contact meal delivery and some kitchen prep. They are having a virtual new volunteer orientation on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11 am.
- TALK ABOUT SOCIAL JUSTICE Looking for another resource to have in depth discussions with your children about various social justice issues? Teaching Tolerance has articles, projects, and other resources to help you do that. Currently, their home page is highlighting resources for teaching Dr King's legacy in the wake of the attack on the Capitol on January 6.
- ALL WEEKEND: Want to get outside and do something for our natural world? The Rock Creek Conservancy is having various clean up opportunities throughout the weekend.
- ON MONDAY: The 15th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Peace Rally is scheduled to proceed. This day involves a community clean up, a walk, a peace rally, and a parade.
