Winter Athletics Summary, 2019-20

Wednesday, January 15 was microcosm of the extraordinary success that Lowell had during the 2019-20 basketball season. The day included the Lowell MS Boys All Stars defeating Bullis 36-30 on their home court and earning their sixth straight win of the season. On the road, Kayla ’20 scored 30 points as the MS Girls All Stars defeated Bullis 49-25. Meanwhile, at Field the MS Boys Superstars and MS Girls Superstars both won by double digits. This season, for the first time in school history, Lowell had eight different basketball teams with over 80 athletes participating as a part of the Lowell basketball family. The Leopards won three tournament titles, over 30 games and had lots of supportive energy in the Lowell Dome throughout the season.

 

The Middle School Boys All Stars won the first seven games of the season, including a championship over Sheridan at the Burke Tournament. After defeating Burke in the first round, the Leopards advanced to beat rival Sheridan in a tight, back and forth game, 35-33. The team had four players or more with at least eight points, showing off extraordinary balance in their memorable victory! The Leopards finished the season with 11 wins, including an epic overtime win to open the season vs Hebrew Academy 51-48 and a come-from-behind victory on the road at Woods Academy, 44-33. In the frontcourt, Oakley ‘20 and Sam ’20 proved to be a formidable duo, both tall and strong, but also possessing excellent athleticism and footwork. It was an amazing season for Lowell, our third 10+ win season in a row, all with point guard Jacob ’20 running the offense. This team was led by Ezra ’21—who scored double digits in 12 of the team’s 14 games. The team matched Lowell’s all-time best record, finishing 11-3. The Leopards graduate nine players but will return two starters towards their 20-21 campaign.

 

The Middle School Girls All Stars were 4-0 in tournament play winning the Sheridan Tournament over Burke and the Lowell Tournament over Waldorf, both by double digits. With the Lowell trophy case overflowing, the Leopards won two tournaments for the second season in a row. Additionally, the team had a come-from-behind victory over Hebrew Academy, a dominant win over Bullis, and six consecutive quarters holding opponents scoreless. With Kayla ’20 and Zuri ’22 in the backcourt, opponents struggled to defend Lowell’s dominant guards. Each player regularly scored in double digits, including Kayla’s 30-point effort at Bullis. The team finished the season with 11 wins—among the highest win totals in Lowell history. In their three seasons, Lowell’s 8^th Graders (Kayla, Isabella, Lucy, Jessie and Charis) have won five tournaments and over 30 games. It was an extraordinary season for Lowell, and the Leopards return seven excellent players for next season.

           

The Middle School Superstars had their best seasons ever. On the boys side, Alejandro ’21 and Ian ‘22 led the Leopards to victories over Field, the German School, McLean, and Barnesville. With a potent 2-3 full court defense, the team played at a high level throughout the season.

 

The girls first Superstars team had a lot of success. The team opened the season with an 18-10 victory at Woods Academy and followed it up with another impressive win on the road at Field. Led by Maggie ‘22, Alexandra ’22, and Clara ‘22, the 6^th graders proved that the future of Lowell basketball is bright.

 

The 4/5 Boys All Stars finished their 5-2 season with three victories on the road in seven days. Norwood, Milton, and Hebrew Academy were all victims of Lowell’s excellent 1-2-2 press. Luca ‘23 and Cassius ‘24 were impossible to get around in the backcourt, and every Leopard scored in Lowell’s final game on the road at Hebrew Academy.

 

The 4/5 Girls games were almost always separated by one basket. The team played exciting duels at home vs McLean and on the road vs Milton, where Hunter ’23 scored the winning basket in the waning moments. To end the season, Zoe M ’23 was on fire at Hebrew Academy, a game Lowell won easily.

 

The Boys 4/5 Superstars were led by Nathaniel ’24 and Matthew ’24. The team played their hearts out on the road at Norwood and at home vs Siena. The Leopards improved their skills, setting the program up for an exciting future.

 

The first-ever 4/5 Girls Superstars team enjoyed an exciting home victory against Siena, with Qynn ’23 and Lola ’23 sealing the game with excellent defense and rebounding.
