Goodnight, Moon

Children in the Discovery Room work together in the Wonder Lab to make a full moon or “la luna llena.” The children’s exploration of the moon began with a lesson for Black History Month on African Americans in STEM fields like mathematician Katherine Johnson, who calculated space shuttle flight paths, and astronaut Mae Jemison. The lunar explorations also compliment the Pre-Primary School’s nighttime unit, which began this week.

This week and next, classrooms are investigating answers to questions like How do we know it is night? What do you do at nighttime? What do you want to know or are wondering about the night? The nighttime unit familiarizes children with a time of day they naturally have questions or worry about. Children share their nighttime routines, learn about nocturnal animals and night-blooming flowers, and dance as fireflies, shooting stars, phases of the moon, and nocturnal animals.
