Great Game Challenge

Laser cutters and 3D printers hum in the background as 3rd through 5th graders pour into the Innovation Studio makerspace in Primary School during lunchtime. They’re on a mission…to create the perfect game.

Academic Technologist Sam Moser began the Great Game Challenge as a way to offer students more time and experience using maker tools. Students can push their creativity designing puzzles, card games, and board games for younger students using CAD modeling programs and fabrication tools like laser and vinyl cutters and 3D printers.

Already, the results are remarkable. A variety of games have been created by individuals and small groups. Grounded in the design process, 3rd–5th graders are learning empathy as they design for a specific audience and investigate the user experience. “It has been incredible to watch students discuss the intent of different game pieces,” says Sam, as he observes students imagine how the games will be played by different players. Once the games are finished, they will be added to game collections in K–2 classrooms.

Still a work in progress, Sam is looking forward to seeing final prototypes on view at STEMFest on March 14. This is a display you won’t want to miss!
