On January 13, 2016, the Lowell class of 2020 took the court at Sheridan. Overwhelmed and inexperienced, they managed 6 points for the game—all scored by Kayla—losing 34-6. Nobody who was there in 2016 could have imagined what five years working hard together can do. Now, we’re a powerhouse.

The Final Match-Up
With a slight halftime lead of 11-7, the Leopards focused on limiting possessions for their opponent. Burke was getting off multiple shots per possession, and Lowell worked together to put that to a stop. Charis claimed nearly every rebound, passing to Kayla who set up the offense for her team. With 12 second-half points (and an unbelievable total of 40 between the two games) Kayla was playing at an MVP level—completely unstoppable—sometimes getting two or three rebounds of her own when Lowell had the ball—and scoring in the paint. When Burke focused their attention on Kayla, Isabella took advantage. She used excellent footwork and got to the basket or set her feet for a mid-range jumper. Isabella finished with 8 points for the game, all in the second half.

At the end of three quarters, the Leopards had increased their lead to 11. This was in part due to the best game of Bella’s career. Working with Alexandra at the top of the press, each player had tons of steals and then patiently set up the offense and worked with Elodie to run the offense. With a double-digit lead of 33-19 and time running off the clock, the 8th graders supported their younger teammates who got great experience today—and a first-place trophy. Congratulations to the Leopards on their tournament championship, their second in a row!

Earlier in the Tournament
In the opening match-up against Green Acres, the Leopards broke the press with ease. Natasha was everywhere, getting tons of rebounds. She was always open, resulting in her first basket of the season, a tough contested shot in the paint. Jessie was simply formidable, the strongest player on the court, and she was fully in command at the high post. Sometimes, she drove to the basket. Other times, she turned and knocked down the jump shot.  She also set up her teammates, including Alexandra. She was a little nervous before the game, but now she knows that she belongs! Alexandra earned six trips to the foul line! Clara was also a force in the post.

Lowell held Green Acres scoreless in the first quarter (their fifth straight shutout) and gave up only four in the first half. They finished with a solid victory, 27-13.
