Foundations of Literacy in Pre-Primary

For Morning Meeting in the Explorers Room, teachers Lisa Powell and Sara Siegrist take attendance and review the schedule of the day with the aid of pictures. But the pictures go beyond helping students to recognize and recall names of people, places, and daily activities. “Morning Schedule is a huge literacy piece," says Sara.

For example, as students connect each other’s faces with the names written underneath, they begin to identify the first letters and sounds of words. By the end of the year, children connect each child with the beginning letters and sounds of their first names. Teachers guide students in reading the Morning Schedule from left to right, elongating the beginning sounds of words. Reviewing the days of the week introduces the concept of patterns to the students as each day follows another in a specified order. An added benefit of reviewing the Morning Schedule is the independence students build as they learn what to expect of their day.
