Math Olympiad Team Excels

Lowell’s 5th grade Math Olympiad team excelled this year with two students in the top 50% for the nation, four students in the top 40%, and one student in the top 20%. Fourteen students on the team met with PS Math Resource Teacher Jess Tomback weekly during their lunch period to solve complex math problems and learn new concepts. From November to March, once a month, the 5th graders completed a timed task independently and reported their scores to MOEMS. MOEMS compared their data to that of students within their assigned division across the country and then calculated the percentiles. Math Olympiad is designed to spur a love for mathematics, encourage problem solving flexibility, and promote creativity and ingenuity. Lowell students clearly met the challenge!
