Capstone Trips in Full Swing

This week, 6th, 7th, and 8th graders embarked on their capstone trips. They're having transformative experiences in Costa Rica, the South, and Tangier Island.

In Costa Rica, 8th graders are immersing themselves in a rural farming community. They are staying with host families, helping with daily chores, and practicing their Spanish conversation skills. To help advance the community’s sustainability practices, they are sharing the benefits of clean energy and building bio-char stoves. In preparation for the trip, students learned about Costa Rica’s history, culture, economics, and environmental issues.

Meanwhile, 7th graders are travelling through the South, gaining valuable insights about the civil rights movement. In Atlanta, they are visiting the Center for Civil and Human Rights and the birthplace of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In Montgomery, they are experiencing the Equal Justice Initiative’s Monument to Peace and Justice, walking over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, and exploring the city’s key sites—including the corner where Rosa Parks boarded the Cleveland Avenue bus, which was also the site of a market for enslaved people in the days before the Civil War.

New this year, 6th graders are extending their climate change studies by travelling to Tangier Island and the Northern Neck of the Chesapeake Bay. They are talking with residents of Tangier Island, working on an oyster restoration project with Friends of the Rappahannock, and learning more about the region’s watermen at the Reedville Fisherman’s Museum.
