Discovery Room Experiences Rock Creek Park

This week, Discovery Room children went on a quest to Rock Creek Park to gather materials for an art project. They needed to find some small round rocks to paint like bees for their hive, and Art Teacher Mario Argueta knew just the spot. As they headed out on their adventure, students noted different sights, sounds, and smells. Teachers named trees along their route pointing out the differences between the trees. Among the blooming flower beds and bushes, students observed bees sipping nectar.

At the shoreline, Mario gathered the children along the rock bed to show them the type of rock they would need and off they went. Within a few minutes children had all the rocks they needed. Now, it was time to play and explore. With a safe distance from one another the children threw rocks into the creek as their teachers watched. Children jumped and laughed as the rocks splashed into the water. Kerplunk! “I love that sound,” Teacher Ana Ardon said.

She summed up the value of the trip this way, “Seeing bees going about their work with the azalea flowers vividly captures and reinforces in a single moment the work done in the classroom about pollinators. Throwing rocks to splash in the creek, breathing underneath trees, and duck watching helps build that appreciation of nature and a responsibility to preserve it.”

Parents can check out the finished bee hives at the Pre-Primary School Exhibit June 1. Mark your calendars!
