Lionfish 2018-19 Season

What a season the Lionfish have had! Since September, swimmers ages 6–18 have been practicing hard and competing at two meets every month, including the Turkey Clause Championship meet in December and the Cherry Blossom Championship meet in early March. That adds up to over 23,000 yards and 250 competitive events!

At the championship meets, more than 20 swimmers made it back to finals and the Lionfish placed first the 11-12-year-old 50y and 200y freestyle, second in the 8-and-under 25y freestyle, and third in the 8-and-under 25y backstroke. According to Coach Scott Bryant, “The Lionfish have been all over the region representing the Lowell Community with poise and grace while swimming fast and winning along the way.”

The team, first recognized by USA Swimming in 2013, is now just under 100 total swimmers strong with roughly 35% of the team coming from Lowell and 65% of the team coming from the community. This year, the team graduates its first high school senior, Abby Ginter ‘15. Abby learned to swim at Lowell and was an inaugural member of the Lionfish, the first coach-in-training, and the first swimmer to become a full-fledged coach.
