2nd Grade Curriculum Share

Today’s 2nd grade curriculum share highlighted the theme of structures through student performances and a special museum designed just for parents. 

 

Second graders began with spirited renditions of a Mexican rock-passing song, a Mexican rhythmic chant, and a recorder duet arrangement of the Mexican Hat Dance. This was followed by La Cucaracha, a traditional Mexican folk dance and Ukuti, a children's folk dance from Kenya.

 

After their performances, 2^nd graders served as tour guides for the parents and showed them their curriculum “museum.” In the library, parents saw a display of the students’ alebrijes, brightly colored fantastical and mythical creatures inspired by Mexican folk art. In second-floor hallways in classrooms, parents perused thoughtfully curated collections of the students’ work. Language arts displays included “pigeon books” modeled after the work of Mo Willems, small moment narratives, and informational writing on the topic of accessibility. Social studies displays focused on the Mexico and Kenya units and included important travel documents, topographical maps, and reports related to activism.
