Winter Athletics Wrap Up

The Middle School girls team sandwiched two tournament championships into their incredible 11-1 record, the best in Lowell history. The team beat Sheridan in the Burke Tournament, 22-21, and Barnesville in the Lowell January Jam Tournament, 28-17! Led by an exciting backcourt of Kayla ’20 and Zuri ’22, the Leopards are in a position to be even better next season.

 

Reinforcements are on the way, as the 4/5 girls team posted their first winning record since the 2014-15 season. After losing at Woods Academy early in the season, the Leopards notched their first victory against Hebrew Academy in the Lowell Dome. Their most exciting game of the year came on the road at Milton, where the team overcame a six-point deficit in the fourth quarter and forced overtime behind a double-digit scoring effort from Maggie ’22. In the extra period, the Leopards came back to defeat Milton by a score of 14-12. The Leopards had one of the deepest rosters ever, with nearly twenty players!

 

The Middle School Boys All-Stars earned their 10th win against a much larger team in late February. With 10 points from Dylan ‘18, the Leopards defeated St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes on the road. The Leopards had eight different 8th graders on the roster, and that leadership carried the team to a seven-game win streak. During that stretch, Lowell overcame a scoreless first quarter to come back and defeat Waldorf 27-24! Additionally, the Leopards scored 40 or more points 4 times. The team earned second place in the Lowell January Jam Tournament highlighted by a 42-27 win over Barnesville in which Jacob ’19 and Dylan ‘18 combined for 25 points. The team finished the season with an impressive record of 10-4, their third season in the last four with at least ten wins.

 

The Middle School Boys Superstars saw breakout seasons from Julian ’21, Alejandro ’20 and Eli ’19, who helped carry the team to two home victories. Julian scored 19 to lead the Leopards to a 26-7 win over Field early in the season, while Alejandro and Eli combined for 15 points in a late-season win against Barnesville. The Leopards finished the season with a 2-4 record.

 

The 4/5 Boys All-Stars won five games in a row after losing their first two games. The team regularly beat older and taller teams: NPS, Hebrew Academy, Milton, and McLean all lost to Lowell during our streak. The three-headed monster of Luca ’21, Julian ’21, and Cyrus ’21 overcame any size disadvantage the team may have had. A 4th grader with endless potential, Luca, averaged 13 points per game this season and will return to a squad that finished with a 5-2 record.

Working on the basics of half-court defense, strong passing, and ball handling, the 4/5 Boys Superstars improved dramatically over the course of the season. With solid backcourt play from Noah ’23 and inside presence from Braxton ’22, the Leopards scored double digits in every game, highlighted by Noah’s 13-point performance on the road at Woods Academy.
