7th Graders to Showcase Projects at STEMFest

Seventh graders are set to showcase their independent projects at STEMFest on March 9. This term, STEAM Teachers, Rebecca Prochilo, Kavan Yee, and Matt Frattali have helped students leverage their interests and strengths to design their own projects. With no limit on the topics they could investigate, 7th graders embraced the challenge and chose to explore everything from forensics to hydraulics. The only catch? Students needed to design a project that would incorporate all five disciplines of STEAM—science, technology, engineering, art, and math.

To scaffold the experience, teachers required students to write a proposal, complete with budget and timeline. This process stretched students’ planning, critical thinking, and reasoning skills and helped ensure the success of their projects.

Giving students freedom of choice has left teachers in awe of the creativity and skill that students have displayed. “They have come up with some truly phenomenal project ideas that incorporate STEAM in unexpected ways,” Becky says. Students have also shown great resilience as they persevere through one challenge to the next. “The whole premise of STEAM is to test, test, test,” says Kavan. “We want to see students demonstrate a concept or knowledge and apply it to something else.”

Curious to see how the design of a potato launcher, a musical instrument, and a superhero costume incorporate all the disciplines of STEAM? Come see the 7th grade projects at STEMFest on March 9 from 10:00 am–12:00 pm.
