2nd Grade Topographic Maps

Second graders finished their unit on Mexico making topographic maps of the country to apply what they learned about the mountain, desert, coastal, and rainforest regions. They were challenged to recreate what each region looked like on a map and added in details such as Mexico City, bodies of water, and a compass rose.

Not only did the 2nd graders learn about geography, but they immersed themselves in learning about social structures to understand what life is like in Mexico. They compared and contrasted characteristics of Mexican and American cultures, investigated how the geography of Mexico influences the ways people live and explored how people interact as members families and communities. This unit is the first in a series focused on broadening students’ perspectives and giving them the skills to imagine what life is like in another person’s shoes.
