Middle School Girls Win January Jam Tournament!

By Athletics Director Dave Levy
The Leopards narrowly defeated Barnesville on the road, 23-22, back in December. In last week’s tightly contested championship game, Lowell led by a slight margin of 8-7 at half time. That’s when the Leopards took over. On the first possession of the third quarter, Charis found Zuri cutting to the lane. She knocked in a basket–the first of three Zuri had in the third quarter. Along the way, Barnesville’s point guard fouled outscoring a mere 6 points after scoring 15 earlier this season. With Mallory imploring her team to finish the game, Tenaya added four key points in the second half. Sofia and Laila tossed the ball around as the clock wound down, marking the Leopards as the 2019 January Jam Champions, defeating rival Barnesville 28-17!

There was a lot of work that went into the victory. Charis started both games–and showed off the full repertoire of her game. She brought the ball up the court, rebounded like a fiend and put up a number of quality shots. Elsa played great minutes on the block–identifying the opponent’s strong players defensively, and shooting near the basket offensively. The team came out in their signature press, with Lucy helping to trap with Elodie–who has continued to improve throughout the season. Despite a slow first half, Zuri scored 12 in the second to put Burke away 25-14 in the first game of the tournament.

Isabella defended Barnesville’s point guard with voracious intensity, denying her the ball and forcing her to take difficult shots. Jessie made a baseline jumper, providing energy in the second half. Maddie played some key minutes in the closing moments. Kayla stepped up her game immensely–her 12-point effort was the most she has scored this season.

The Leopards are an impressive 9-1 team, winners of both the Burke Tournament and Lowell’s January Jam Tournament! It has truly been a magical season. It’s not over quite yet!

The team will end their season on Tuesday at 4:00 pm with their annual parent game, and we will celebrate Tenaya, our lone 8th Grader, for her storied career!

What a ride it’s been! Congratulations!
