Making a Difference

This year, service opportunities abound at Lowell. From annual favorites such as Candy for the Troops and the winter coat drive to parent and student-led initiatives, there are many ways our community has come together to make a difference.
 
The Lowell Parent Community (LPC) and the Lowell Parents of Students of Color (LPSC) groups are in full swing with their service activities for families. The Pie Collection, a yearly favorite, brought in 94 seasonal pies for DC Central Kitchen. Thirty-four people led by the LPSC joined Project Give Back to assemble food boxes. Volunteers assembled over 1600 boxes, each filled with food for a week for families in need. “We were really impressed with how much our kids loved being involved,” says LPSC President Melody Jackson. Some have already asked to participate again next year!
 
Volunteering and serving their communities through school-related activities has inspired Lowell students to think of additional ways to help others. For example, two 8th graders led a soccer cleat drive in Middle School this fall and collected 45 cleats, numerous shorts, shirts, socks, and shin guards. The donations will make their way to outfit the Township Soccer Team in Cape Town, South Africa. And, a 6th grader just launched a personal campaign to collect donations for The Shoe that Grows, an organization giving kids shoes that can expand up to 5 sizes.
 
Thanks to Auxiliary Programs our partnership with Greentree Shelter in Bethesda is growing ever stronger. The shelter is a transitional home assisting homeless families to rebuild their lives. Lowell is committed to providing meals to feed 85 families throughout the year. Donation days resume in January.

  • your grade’s Greentree Shelter donation day (3rd and 7th grade coming up Jan. 28)
  • the Comfort Cases back pack packing party with the LPC on Feb. 9
 
Giving by the numbers:
 
45 pairs of cleats and numerous soccer uniform items collected for children
100 lbs of “Candy for the Troops” with letters of appreciation sent to military service men and women overseas
Over 75 coats donated to Hope and a Home
94 pies went to DC Central Kitchen.
