By Athletic Director Dave Levy

With a record number of 93 athletes participating in fall athletics, Lowell enjoyed incredible success.

The Cross Country team earned its fifth consecutive Small Schools Championship, and the team will raise yet another banner in the gym to commemorate their success. The 4/5 Boys Soccer team outscored their opponents 26-7, regularly winning by definitive margins. The Girls Soccer team impressed its home crowd with a thrilling win over Burke on the front field! The Middle School Boys Soccer team had Lowell’s youngest roster ever, with only four 8th graders, and is building toward the future. For all of the athletes, coaches, and families involved, the 2018 fall season represented incredible success, sportsmanship, and growth for the Lowell's athletics program.

Cross Country
The Cross Country team competed with and beat the best runners in the Washington area. Highlights included an incredible effort at the Landon Invitational, the largest meet in the state of Maryland. Both the boys and girls teams finished 6th out of 20 teams as Lowell defeated a number of tough opponents including St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes, Maret, and Bullis. Zoe, a 4th grader with tremendous promise, took 12th place overall and earned a ribbon for her success!

For the fifth season in a row, the Lowell's Cross Country team won the Small School Championships held at Barrie. This season, the meet was super close with Lowell edging out Lab School 27-35. Mac (12:53) was the overall winner, and even though Lab finished 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, Lowell’s depth proved superior as Joshua 5th, (13:42), Evan 6th (14:00), and Isaiah 7th (14:10) also finished in the top ten. Zoe (14:04) was the 2nd female finisher!

For the third year in a row, Lowell was invited to participate in the MD/DC Private School Championships at Belvoir Scotts, where they competed on an incredibly challenging course with nearly 250 runners and 22 teams. Frederick (14:58) placed 16th to lead the boys team, while Zoe (16:57) placed 19th to pace the girls. Both teams finished 6th out of 22 teams, defeating Saint Andrew’s, Washington Episcopal, Forcey, and Burke among others. The boys placed all five of their scoring runners in the top 50, while the girls had three (Zoe, Natalie, and Liliana) in the top 25 for the first time in Lowell history.

The Leopards have been training since mid-August and improved throughout the season. The team earning personal records as they trained hard in Rock Creek Park logging tons of miles and battling through challenging interval workouts. The Leopards are remarkably young, with only three graduating 8th graders, and are poised to go after a sixth consecutive championship title next season.

Soccer
Each of the Lowell soccer teams enjoyed great success. The 4/5 Boys Soccer team never trailed in each of their first four games. They defeated Woods Academy, Norwood, St Patrick’s, and Milton School each by multiple goals. They outscored their opponents by a total of 26-7 this season. Luca, Julian, and Cyrus all had hat tricks, while Reese was a fabulous goal tender between the pipes. The Leopards finished 4-1, qualifying for the semi-finals of the Woods Academy Tournament. With 22 players, the Leopards had their largest roster ever. Many of the players are 5th graders, and our Middle School coaches are very excited to have them play at the next level.

Finishing with a record of 2-2-2, the Girls Soccer team took on a number of exciting challenges this season. In the season opener, the Leopards hosted Burke and earned a 6-5 victory behind two goals from Kayla and terrific team defense to protect a narrow lead! With a group of athletes that includes 4th-8th graders, the Leopards worked beautifully together and had contributions from many different players. Fifth graders Winnie and Maggie both scored in an exciting 2-2 tie at Norwood, while the Leopards enjoyed strong defense from Natasha, Elodie, Bella, and Elsa in front of their tough 8th grade goaltender, Arielle. The team finished their season with a 5-1 win at Waldorf School, with 8th grade striker Brielle powering the offense one final time. The Leopards are loaded with young talent and are excited for the future!

The Middle School Boys Soccer team enjoyed great leadership from their four 8th graders, but the team was otherwise very young. Jake, playing excellent defense in the center, is always pushing the ball ahead to Ned in the midfield. Both Alex and Julian did a fine job as strikers this season. The Leopards played a number of close games, always playing the 2nd half better than the first. Lowell played a tough and close 4-2 game against Avalon in the rain, highlighted by goals for both James and Alex. Additionally, the Leopards took on a deep and talented Barnesville team on the road, also decided by a two-goal margin. With eight 6th graders on the roster, the Leopards will be poised for an excellent season in 2019.
