DC Emancipation Day Celebrations

On Monday, students learned about a slice of local history: the DC Compensated Emancipation Act of 1962, a law that abolished slavery in the District by paying owners for the freeing the people they had enslaved. Students discovered who supported and who opposed the Act and why; they created art exploring ideas of freedom; they learned about the contraband camps that formerly enslaved people joined after emancipation; and they cut out over 3,000 hearts—one for each emancipated person in DC—which they then used to create a commemorative mural.
