Always Learning
Lowell has dynamic professional development and parent education programs that pay attention to diversity, inclusion, and equity issues. These programs enhance the work of teachers, staff, and parents and are an important part of healthy community-building.
In addition to offering workshops, speakers, book talks, and film screenings, Lowell hosts a year-long seminar for faculty and staff as part of The National SEED Project on Inclusive Curriculum.
Lowell's director of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives identifies various local and national events for individuals and groups. Past professional development opportunities have included the NAIS People of Color Conference and AIMS Diversity Conference for Teachers and Administrators.

2018-19
- The Diversity Committee of the Board of Trustees engages Chris Mosier to talk to parents, faculty, and students in 4th grade and up about his experience as a trailblazing trans triathlete on Team USA.
- A task force is established to study The Guide for White Women Who Teach Black Boys and creates a year-long program of workshops for all faculty, as well as interested staff.
- Lowell hosts the regional Diversity and Inclusion Conversation for Elementary School Educators.
- All faculty attend the Capital Area Progressive Schools (CAPS) Conference on “Responsive Practices: Diversity, Equity, and Differentiation.” Lowell teachers lead five workshops and three roundtable discussions and also participate in two panel discussions.
- The Faculty-Staff Diversity Committee promotes a school-wide door decorating initiative during the month of February to draw attention to the Black Lives Matter movement.
- MS faculty establish weekly “tea times” for faculty to discuss Universal Design for Learning strategies.
- Michelle Belton, Jason Novak, Stefania Rubino, and Kavan Yee present a workshop on “Building a Community of Inclusion” at the Carney Sandoe FORUM/Diversity and also attend the 2019 NAIS Diversity Leadership Institute.
- Middle School Spanish teachers present “From Curriculum to Action: Social Justice in the Spanish Classroom” at the 2019 NAIS National Conference.
- 10 faculty members attend the NAIS People of Color Conference (POCC)

2017-18
- School hosts panel discussion for the community "Teaching and Reaching Black Boys in America" with Dr. Eddie Moore and authors of "The Guide for White Women Who Teach Black Boys"
- Middle School faculty are trained in Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- School exhibits "Building Bridges: Portraits of Immigrants and Refugees" from the Family Diversity Projects and "Portraits of Life: Holocaust Survivors of Montgomery County"
- Board Diversity Committee hosts workshop on "Conversation Skills When You Don't See Eye to Eye" with Rev. Canon Charles Gibbs and organizes a family outing to see Digging Up Dessa in the Women's Voices Theater Festival at the Kennedy Center
- 9 faculty members attend the NAIS People of Color Conference (POCC)
- 3 faculty members present a session on identity, social justice, and activisim at POCC to a standing-room-only crowd
