Our Commitment to DEIB

Anchored in our history and mission, we believe that the foundations of advocacy begin in childhood and early adolescence. Established in 1965, just one year after Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Lowell's founders established this institution to disrupt the existing norms and "wanted the school to be as inclusive and heterogeneous as possible." Six decades later, these values remain a priority at Lowell, and we recognize that diversity in all its forms is vital to an educational experience and working towards building a stronger, more compassionate society.

One of the most important values we uphold at Lowell is the desire to help build and sustain a more just and equitable society. Throughout our curriculum, we guide students in understanding the fundamentals of human and civil rights, exploring the history of pursuing and protecting them, and contributing to advancing social justice in today’s world. We have a corresponding commitment to ensuring our staff and families have the information and training they need not only to advance their own practice, but also to proactively support our students in becoming the changemakers our society needs.

In the Classroom

To dismantle systems of oppression, exclusion, and inequality, and become engaged citizens of the world, children must recognize the humanity and value of all people from the youngest of ages.

Throughout our curriculum, we guide students in understanding the fundamentals of human and civil rights, exploring the history of pursuing and protecting them, being committed to their local community and the larger world, and contributing to advancing social justice today and in the future. They are immersed daily in an environment that strives to provide opportunities for connection, curiosity, collaboration, respect, and understanding.

Teaching our students that society remains a systemically exclusive experience for so many, while encouraging them to help create a world free of these barriers, is core to our mission...and a fundamental underpinning of academic excellence.

In the Family

We offer our families and community dynamic educational programs that enhance the work of teachers, staff, and parents, but are an important part of healthy community-building.

In the Profession

We provide our staff with engaging and inspiring professional development opportunities designed to support and expand their practice. We also encourage them to share their expertise broadly within the education community to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, not just in our community but around the world.

In the Community

DEIB is woven into the fabric of Lowell—from how we build community through admissions and hiring to how we provide mirrors and windows for the myriad of student and family identities.

We host a variety of affinity groups and clubs for students as young as Primary School, as well as several groups for parents and caregivers.
