Pre Primary School Co-Teacher (Parental Leave) September 1, 2026–February 1, 2027 (2’s and 3’s)

Lowell School, a progressive school of approximately 300 students in Northwest Washington, DC, seeks a Pre-Primary School (2s and 3s) Co-Teacher  to cover Parental Leave from September 1, 2026–February 1, 2027. This position reports to the Director of Pre-Primary School and is a member of the Pre-Primary School Division.

Education and Experience:  

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Early Childhood Education or a related field
  • Minimum of 1–3 years of teaching experience in an early childhood setting

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Strong understanding of the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of young children
  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices and the needs of Early Childhood learners (2’s and 3’s)
  • Experience designing and facilitating emergent, play-based, project-based, and inquiry-driven curriculum
  • Familiarity with early literacy, math, and social-emotional learning foundations
  • Commitment to building strong, positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues
  • Ability to create a nurturing, inclusive, and engaging classroom environment that supports curiosity, independence, and collaboration
  • Experience with Responsive Classroom, Reggio Emilia, Project-Based Learning (PBL), or other progressive educational approaches preferred
  • Strong observation, documentation, and reflection skills to support individualized learning and growth
  • Flexibility, creativity, and collaboration as part of a teaching team
  • Wholehearted support of the mission and core values of the school

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain a warm, inclusive classroom community where each child feels seen, valued, and respected
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate, play-based, and inquiry-driven learning experiences
  • Observe, document, and reflect on children’s learning, growth, and interests to guide curriculum planning
  • Support children’s social-emotional development, relationship-building, and growing independence
  • Create meaningful project-based and emergent curriculum based on children’s questions, ideas, and curiosities
  • Foster creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and exploration through hands-on learning
  • Communicate regularly with families about their child’s growth and classroom experiences
  • Partner with families to support each child’s learning and development
  • Collaborate with co-teachers, specialists, and administrators to support the whole child and strengthen the classroom community
  • Maintain a safe, organized, and engaging classroom environment that encourages curiosity, creativity, and independence

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Ability to move throughout school facilities and lead students to safety in the event of an emergency
  • Ability to sit on the floor for extended periods and actively engage in classroom activities

Expected Salary Range:

  • $55,000–68,000
