Primary School Lead Teacher

Lowell School, a progressive school of approximately 330 students in NW Washington, DC, seeks a Primary School Lead Teacher. We seek candidates to join our Primary School beginning at the start of the 2024–2025 academic year. The Primary School Lead Teacher reports to the Primary School Director and is a member of the Primary School Division. 

Education and Experience:   
  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in elementary education or a related field, master’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of 1 to 3 years of teaching experience.
Required Skills/Abilities: 
  • Knowledge of the social, emotional, and academic needs of elementary-age students.
  • Well-versed in best practices for delivering language arts, mathematics, and social studies instruction.
  • Experience with Responsive Classroom and a commitment to progressive education.
  • The ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
  • A commitment to inquiry and project-based learning.
  • Wholehearted support of the mission of the school.
Duties/Responsibilities: 
  • Cultivate and sustain a community of learners in the classroom where each individual is honored and respected.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive, age-appropriate math, language arts, and social studies curriculum.
  • Leading morning meetings using a Responsive Classroom approach.
  • Be attuned to each student’s academic progress, social-emotional skills, and positive identity development.
  • Communicate effectively with students and families.
  • Collaborate with other classroom teachers, specialists, and administrators.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development that supports the experience of students and aligns with schoolwide initiatives.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to traverse school facilities and lead students to safety in the event of an emergency.
  • Long periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
