A Vote for Play

Primary School students were invited to share their voices this week and cast their votes for what they would like to see included in the design of the new back playground. Director of Primary School Jason Novak showed the students eight different features, including a mud kitchen, sand area, outdoor classroom, climbing structure, music and movement area, water feature for exploration, building area, and open play area for running, games, and soccer. Faculty members are next to cast their votes and then parents, who saw a presentation about the new play space at Back to School Night.

“The purpose of this exercise is to gather a sense of the community’s priorities as we begin the design process,” says Director of Development Wendy McGrath. “We’re really excited to get the design process started!”

After Jason presented the ideas to K-5 students during Gathering, he started to receive notes and drawings from them with their ideas. One 3rd grader even submitted a design detailing her ideal playground. Second graders have invited Wendy, Jason, and Associate Head of School Doug Odom to hear their thoughts on the new playground as it relates to their current studies in accessibility and adaptability. On Friday, the students will present to the trio their observations and experiences from their trip to Hadley’s Park.

It’s no surprise, the enthusiasm Primary School students have for being included in this process. In fact, much thought is being given to this project from all sides. Wendy, Doug, and Jason are meeting with the landscape architect, LSG Inc., throughout the fall to discuss design options, and Jason is meeting with faculty and staff to discuss a variety of playground issues, including safety features and ways that the new playground can support social-emotional growth.

Though still very early in the process, the project is on track to break ground after the last day of school in June and to open before the first day of school next year.

Parents, be sure to cast your vote during parent-teacher conferences next Thursday and Friday, October 29–30! The eight boards will be available in the Main Building lobby.
