Amateurs But Not Amateur-ish

Now in it's 5th year, Amateur Night has hosted a wide range of acts from playing piano, singing, and tap dancing to yodeling, magic, and comedy. The event is run completely by 6th graders with the goal of raising money to fund current and future Middle School field trips.

Behind the Scenes

A lot of preparation goes into this community-building fundraiser. Planning begins with a visit to the Apollo Theater in New York City. While at a show, the students observe how the performances are run and what jobs are necessary to run the event. When 6th graders return, they assume their assigned jobs, which range from emcee, stage crew, and management to judge, usher, and marketer.

The students then work with their Delta Coaches to create a supportive atmosphere for people to share their talent. No booing is allowed during the event, but some audience participation is welcomed. “Amateur night is always incredible to watch,” said Sara Chesson, 6th grade Delta Coach.

This year’s show was packed with musical performances, including a full band, a lip sync and dancing duo, and a magician. As each performer entered the stage area, 6th graders scurried around to set up the necessary instruments and props. Backstage, management and crew flipped through the schedule prepping materials for the following act. The students took on the responsibility of putting on a good show with seriousness and a sense of pride. They attended to every detail—even spur-of-the-moment troubleshooting of faulty mics.

Reviewing the Show

“It's great to be so hands off and let them make the show their own,” Sara reflected. She added, “Besides seeing the 6th graders step up and lead the event, it's also always amazing to see the variety of acts from Lowell students. There is some serious talent!”
