Alum nominated for a 2014 Annie Award: Steven Sugar '02

Steven Sugar ’02 was nominated for a 2014 Annie Award in the category of Outstanding Achievement, Production Design in an Animated TV/Broadcast Production based on his production design work on Cartoon Network’s new show, Steven’s Universe.

The Annie Awards is the highest honor in the animation world and Steven’s Universe is the brainchild of his older sister, Rebecca Sugar. Named for Steven, the show is an action-fantasy cartoon about three gem-powered super-heroines who mentor an exuberant boy named Steven who hasn’t found his gem powers yet.

The characters are each based on Rebecca’s childhood interactions with Steven and capture their special connection. In a fall Washington Post article Steven remembers, “We spent a lot of time together as kids watching cartoons, playing video games and drawing. We’d brainstorm ideas for comics together, run ideas past each other and get critiques—all of which sort of set the groundwork for what [we’re] doing now.” You can take a look behind the scenes of their show by visiting stevencrewniverse.tumblr.com and keep up with Steven on his blog: stevensugar.tumblr.com.
