Science

Science at Lowell is an active process that nurtures a community of science learners. Our goal is to encourage and support the innate curiosity of children and provide the essential experiences for science inquiry, exploration, and application so that all students have the opportunity to become scientifically literate.

Science instruction is inquiry-based. Students develop and apply inquiry skills and active problem-solving skills as they pose their own questions and investigate the answers through reading or experiments. They observe, collect, classify, predict, analyze, apply and communicate.

The science program was developed using the National Science Education Strands of the National Research Council and Benchmarks for Science Literacy of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Specific content for science instruction is inspired by grade level year themes and complements our social studies program.

Earth stewardship is fundamental to Lowell. Our emphasis on critical thinking, respect for the environment and responsibility for the Earth prepares the students for their roles as stewards of the Earth. Students are active conservationists in community service projects. Daily they conserve Earth's natural resources by recycling paper and plastic, composting, and supporting trash-free lunches.
